How We Design and Build Your Green

Step 1

Site Visit and Layout Discussion

We walk the intended area with you and talk through size, contour options, hole placement, and how the green relates to the rest of the yard. We'll show you photos of greens we've built so you have a concrete reference for what different design choices look like.

Step 2

Contour Design

We design contours that give the green genuine shot variety — at least one slope that breaks right, one that breaks left, and ideally an uphill and downhill section. The design depends on the available space and how serious the golfer is about practice variety.

Step 3

Precision Base Construction

The base of a putting green is different from a standard turf install. We use a finer-grade compacted base layer to create the correct firmness and drainage characteristics for ball roll. Getting this right is what makes the difference between a green that plays like a green and one that plays like carpet.

Step 4

Putting Surface Installation

We install the putting turf with proper tension and alignment. Proper tension is what makes ball roll consistent — too loose and the putt dies early, too tight and it runs past every cup. We calibrate to a speed range appropriate for practice use.

Step 5

Speed Verification and Finishing

We roll putts and verify the green plays at the intended speed before we call the job done. We also install the cup hardware and any fringe edging, and we leave care instructions for the surface.

FAQ

Putting Green Questions

How much space do we need for a functional putting green?

A useful practice green can fit in about 300-400 square feet — that's enough for two or three holes with a couple of different contour sections. Larger spaces (500-800 square feet) allow for more variety and a chipping area if you want one. We can work with what you have.

Can we chip onto it as well as putt?

Yes, if we design a chipping area into it. The putting surface itself isn't designed for direct chip shots — the impact area from a chip needs a slightly different turf grade and base preparation. We can incorporate that into the design if it's something you want.

Will it putt differently depending on season or temperature?

Temperature affects putting speed somewhat — cold turf runs slightly slower than warm turf, which is true on natural greens too. The effect is modest. Rain slows the surface temporarily but it drains quickly. Overall the green plays consistently through Texas seasons.

Can kids play on it without damaging it?

Yes. The putting surface handles regular use by kids and adults alike. The pile is dense and the base is firm — it won't develop divots or bare spots under normal use. We'd suggest against dragging metal-edged toys across it, but standard play is completely fine.
